State Treasurer Dale Folwell has been vocal about issues that go beyond his responsibilities as a treasurer. Folwell spoke to Education First Alliance about the importance of public education and his efforts to improve it. Reforming education requires vision, humility, and courage, and he emphasizes the need for upward mobility and achievement. Folwell has been involved in education for quite some time now and has served on the state school board and the community college board, citing his experience in these areas. He also talked about his legislative work on education and described his goal of having the smartest fourth graders in the United States. Folwell also discussed his success in changing the kindergarten cutoff date in North Carolina, which he believes put children at a competitive disadvantage. He emphasized that adults must take responsibility for governing during times of revolution and that education is about saving lives, saving minds, and saving money.
In the interview, Folwell spoke about his concern about the politicization of schools and noted the tendency for LGBTA clubs to be promoted on educational institution websites, while conservative or religious organizations are sidelined. He called it "discrimination" and voiced his desire to uphold freedom of speech. On the subject of healthcare, Folwell expressed his concern over the use of taxpayer funds for sex change surgeries. Currently, he is involved in a lawsuit on this issue, arguing that taxpayers should not pay for such surgeries.
Folwell has gained support from 21 state attorney generals from across the country, and they have come together to back his case. The treasurer believes that the focus should be on "doing the most good for the most people" and expressed concerns about healthcare providers who would do anything to get state funding. Folwell criticized the use of pension funds to invest in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) policies. He has called for energy independence, safe neighborhoods, and good governance to be the focus of ESG investments. By politicizing public sector pension money, managers charge additional management fees and deprive their investments of margin safety. Finally, Folwell offered advice for young students like Luke who aspire to succeed in life. He emphasized the importance of associating with people of integrity, being prepared for critical decisions, and volunteering for tough jobs. Dale Folwell's views on education, healthcare, and ESG investments reflect his vision for North Carolina. He is committed to excellence in education, to ensuring that taxpayers' money is spent appropriately, and to protecting free speech in public schools.
As Fowell serves as state treasurer and runs for governor in North Carolina, we can expect him to advocate for his beliefs.
